Barney Frank Equality Scholarship

The Barney Frank Equality Scholarship is for students with financial need who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender as well as for allies with financial need who have advocated for the GLBT community. Preference is given to self-identified gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender students whose families have withdrawn financial support upon learning about the sexual orientation or gender identity of their student. However, GLBT & ally students who have not lost parental financial support but who have been involved in successful GLBT advocacy will be considered if no other applicant emerges who has lost financial support from her/hir/his/their family.

Additional eligibility requirements:
At the time of your scholarship application applicants must:
~ Be enrolled at least half-time as an undergraduate or graduate student at BSU
~ Have successfully completed at least one semester of 6 or more credit hours at BSU
~ Be enrolled and matriculated at Bridgewater State University when the award is distributed (i.e., the following Fall semester)
~ Be in good academic standing (GPA of 2.0 or higher)
~ Self-identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or as an ally to the GLBT community
~ Have demonstrated financial need

  1. The Barney Frank Equality Scholarship gives preference to applicants who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender and who have lost financial assistance from their parents or guardians upon disclosing their sexual orientation or gender identity.
    • Have your parents or guardians withdrawn their financial assistance upon learning about your sexual orientation or gender identity?
    • If you answered yes to the above question, please explain. You do not have to share anything you are not comfortable sharing, however, your candidness will assist the scholarship reviewers.
  2. In the event that no applications are received from students who have lost financial support for identifying as GLBT, the committee next reviews the GLBT advocacy efforts of applicants.
    • Have you participated in activities that promote GLBT equity and inclusion?
    • If yes, please describe your efforts and your successes.
